A Beginner’s Guide to Whey Protein

Even if you’re relatively new to the world of health and fitness, you’re likely aware that the key to achieving your fitness goals is a delicate combination of exercise and diet. But this is where common knowledge begins and ends. What many people don’t know is that a critical component is missing from their diet plan – protein supplements.

The popular belief is that protein supplements are only for bodybuilders. Thanks to developments in the health and fitness field, more and more people realise that this is far from the truth. Protein supplements can be enjoyed by just about anyone, whether you are undergoing intense athletic training or simply want to make fitness a regular part of your lifestyle.

What Exactly Are Protein Supplements For?

Protein supplements work for both weight loss and body-building. They burn fat faster as they fuel your metabolism or aid you in developing muscle mass and gaining weight. The results depend on your fitness goals and the type of protein supplements you take.

Whey Protein Supplements and Their Benefits

One type of protein supplements available on the market is whey protein. It is a mixture of different proteins isolated from whey, which is the liquid part of milk that is left behind during cheese production. Cheesemakers back in the day used to discard it before they discovered its nutritional and commercial value.

After being separated during cheese production, whey goes through various processes that eventually result in whey protein. The process depends on what type of whey protein is being produced. On its own, whey protein is generally not palatable, which is why it usually comes in flavoured varieties like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.

Whey protein promotes muscle strength and muscle mass development in various ways. One way is through protein and amino acids that serve as building blocks for increased muscle growth. Another way is by increasing the anabolic hormones in the body, which also aids in muscle growth.

Nutritionists say that the best kinds of proteins are the ones that supply all nine amino acids essential to human health; and whey protein is packed with all of them. Leucine is an amino acid that is mostly responsible for stimulating muscle growth. Whey protein is also rich in cysteine, which gives cells protection from damage caused by free radical compounds.

Different Types of Whey Protein Supplements

There are three types of whey protein, and each has its own characteristics and benefits.

  1. Concentrate – Whey protein concentrate has about 70 to 80 percent protein. It contains some lactose and low levels of carbohydrates and fat. Among the three types, whey concentrate has the best flavour.
  2. Isolate – Whey protein isolate contains a higher percentage of protein than concentrate. It usually contains at least 90 per cent protein and undergoes more processing stages than whey concentrate. It has less lactose and fat and lacks in many of the beneficial nutrients found in whey protein concentrate.
  3. Hydrolysate – Also known as hydrolysed whey, this type of whey protein has been ‘pre-digested,’ which allows the body to absorb the protein faster than other types. Hydrolysed whey is known to spike insulin levels 28 to 43 per cent greater than whey protein isolate.

Whey protein concentrate is the most popular variety. It retains the largest percentage of protein’s beneficial nutrients. But some people prefer whey protein isolate and hydrolysed whey, which are deemed more tolerable and easier to absorb.

Strong Duck’s Whey Protein Products for Beginners

You will find two whey protein products on Strong Duck’s range of protein supplements.

We have the 4-in-1 Whey, which is a specially formulated blend of four premium-quality protein sources, each with its own distinct benefits and absorption rates. The 4-in-1 Whey has a generous helping of whey protein isolate, which as we mentioned earlier, has a high concentration of protein. The formula also has Probiotic Enzymes that increase the efficiency of digestion and absorption and optimise the utilisation of the protein sources.

The 4-in-1 Whey is the ultimate low-fat, low-carb, gluten-free protein that comes in three delicious flavours: chocolate deluxe, strawberries and cream and unflavoured. It is the ideal protein supplement whether you are an athlete undergoing intense training or anyone who is serious about fitness.

We also have the BCAA Whey, which is a gluten-free whey protein blend. It combines the benefits of both whey concentrate and whey isolate.

What sets the BCAA Whey apart from other whey protein blends is the addition of L-Glutamine. It is a cell-volumizer, which increases the absorption of vital nutrients that enhance muscle recovery.

As the product’s name suggests, we also added Branded Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) into our protein blend. BCAAs are essential in the production, maintenance and repair of muscle tissue. They consist of three amino acids – leucine, isoleucine and valine.

As mentioned earlier, leucine promotes protein synthesis and aids in muscle growth. Isoleucine is an amino acid that increases muscle endurance and facilitates the healing of muscle tissues. It is also beneficial in aspects such as regulating blood sugar levels and repairing tissue scars after surgery. Valine provides muscles with extra glucose to prevent them from breaking down during physical activity. It is also responsible for maintaining healthy cognitive functions and relieving conditions like insomnia.
